I think this is sarcastic but just in case. Given how much paper we used before and that this is something that works great with recycled paper and that we can make paper from grasses like bamboo now, I don’t see the need for rainforest cutting to do it.

Yeah I was pointing out just the minimal effect. Shipping locally has the capability of being able to be done with clean energy and then there is the whole most of the weight is from the liquid thing. Not implying international shipping is the only prospect but more how its not really tradeoffs as all the tradeoffs are better options.

We handled the paper needed for all the paperwork that has gone away and we did not even use non tree alternatives at that time. Plus the grocery usages work well with recycled paper. Most of what glass is used for is filled locally. You don’t ship cans of pop or beer from china. Since most glass was liquids the container is not a majority of the weight.

Get rid of them. I was very young but existed in the 70’s and the grocery store did not have all the plastics and there was plenty of convenience in foods. Its amazing what glass, paper, and aluminum can do. Glass was not even recycled usually. Had a deposit added to the cost and got it back when you returned it to the store where the person supplying the item took them back and they were washed and reused. It was why bottle caps were so prevalent.

um. you compost them at home not throw them in the trash. that would make no sense.

yeah that was exactly the point. can use paper towels with a variety of other foods if they have bread or crust. sandwiches, pizza, etc. You can put a plate underneath for stability and not wash it but I think some people won’t be able to handle that mentally.

This thought has crossed my mind in the past so thank you for bringing it up as the comments are interesting. I have been getting into bread and there is thing about supposedly in the past they would eat food off of a slab of bread and then eat the bread and of course in modern times you have bread bowels. I have been eating off the bread on a recycled paper towel (made from recycled paper and don’t have bleach and junk) that then gets composted. My theory is that is better than using a dish but only works for some meals.

I often wish grocery stores where like in the seventies but with just more options food wise. Almost no plastic and paper bags when you leave (although reusable is still better although im not sure how big a deal they would be nowadays since we use so much less paper.)

um @JennieBreeden@lemmy.sdf.org you got two daughters and the one seemed sorta physical when young.

My wifes dad said her dad would take all their candy bars that had nuts and chocolate. I was like WTF!

many mister rogers episodes talked about make believe and in some ways that highlighted reality vs. it. Not sure if they are available to stream.

The consistancy of our shared experiences and perceptions. The nutrients of a food is measurable and known without are reality, the tastyness of a praticular food is an opinion that may be mostly shared by our species but is not quantifiable or necessarily consistant. One person loves popcorn, another hates popcorn, but the amount of carbohydrates is agreed.
